the “handbook”

She who must not be named’s new book Homekeeping Handbook weighs at least 25 lbs and costs $45.00. In fact, the first 114 pages are dedicated to the kitchen. Being the dork that I am I read the whole thing. Even though it was all great information it was way too overwhelming.
Here’s the cliff notes:

  • To clean almost anything in your kitchen use a mixture of several drops of mild dishwashing liquid and warm water. Always try this first before moving harsher products and chemicals.
  • To clean your garbage disposal: Make vinegar ice cubes and throw them down the drain while rinsing with cold water. BTW: always use cold water when running your disposal because warm water could heat grease that will just end up sticking to your pipes.
  • Stack everything to conserve space but stick a paper plate, coffee filter or paper towel in between layers to prevent chipping.
  • Every once and awhile give your wood cutting boards a little TLC with this cutting board cocktail: coarse salt and lemon juice. Scrub for a few mins and then rinse thoroughly.
  • The FDA has outlawed the use of sponges in commercial kitchens. So with that being said, I immediately threw out all my sponges. If you use sponges keep them separated. The dish sponge should just be used for dishes and should be stored in a clean soap dish away from his nasty cousin “counter sponge.”
  • Got Dirt? If you’ve got a particularly dirty pot (baked on food) bring to a boil ¼ cup baking soda and water then remove from heat and let soak for an hour. Scrap off the dirt and wash per usual.
  • List of her favorite cookbooks: Joy of Cooking, Mastering the Art of French Cooking Vol 1 & 2, Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking, Italian Food, French Country Cooking, Cafe Boulud Cookbook, The New Making of a Cook, La Varenne Pratique, La Technique, La Methode, On Food and Cooking, Beard on Bread.
